RAY, Presenter of BROADBAND - Fridays 7 to 10 pm. When I left school I went to St Martins Art School where I joined a band. Not being the best guitarist, and the only one who could drive, I became the Road Manager. After the band split up, I worked for Hawkwind, Kokomo, Chilli Willie and the Red Hot Peppers and Paul Carack's band 'Ace' who had a hit with 'How Long'. While working with Terry Dactyl and the Dinasores, who's singer was Jonah Lewie, a girl came up to us at a party and said 'you lot are always in the kitchen at parties'. Jonah then went on to write the hit 'You'll Always Find Me in the Kitchen at Parties' After that I toured UK/ Europe with Sham 69, Stiff Little Fingers, Motorhead etc……..In the 80's I started a transport company transporting the likes of Whitesnake, Uriah Heap, Thin Lizzie and Iron Maiden in trucks and luxury buses around Europe. After that I formed a production company booking hotels, arranging equipment etc for some of the big names in the business including legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis who I worked with for 6 years until his death in 1992. I also managed artists and bands including Mercedes and Jealous God. In 1985 I got a phone call out of the blue to say that a gig was to be arranged at Wembley Stadium by Bob Geldoff. Everyone including the artists and bands were doing it for free. They asked me to be in charge of transport. (I didn't know what I was letting myself in for!) What vehicles were around; minibuses, transits, anything I could get hold of, I begged, borrowed or stole. With all sorts of promises. Saturday July 13th 1985 - LIVE AID was the biggest one day event of its time but I have too many stories about Live Aid for this space. Now there is a new generation of musicians creating a diverse and exciting range of music. I try to make the music on my show as exciting and interesting as I can with classic tracks and new releases by established and emerging artists from all over the world plus, of course, demos from unsigned bands. |
